I’m actually writing this with Live Writer on Windows 7 RC – however getting Live Writer configured was not a slam dunk. It installed ok. The next step is to configure your blog. It got stuck time after time on “detecting blog icon”. It’s an icon – let it go and move on! I finally let it sit there all night, and stubbornly it was waiting there the next morning.
Surprisingly nothing turned up in a Google search. After way too long, it finally occurred to me to play with the shortcut compatibility settings. I started with “run as administrator” which was enough to do the trick.
Hopefully this will help the next person who searches Google for it :)

Wow! Thank you! I have been trying to add a second blog account to my Windows Live Writer for a while now. I was having the same problem you were and finally did a search on "Windows Live Writer 'detecting blog icon'". Your post was one of two results -- and the only one that did the trick!
Thanks for the comment - glad somebody else could use that!
Unfortunately this solution didn't work for me. Running Windows 7 and still "Detecting blog icon." Thanks for giving me something else to try though.
Rebooting Windows 7 seems to have fixed the issue for me. When in doubt, reboot? =) Thought I'd share.
thanks you lifesaver you....!!! it worked for me and first solution after googling too :D
