So I had a hard drive with a Linux filesystem on it (from FreeNas specifically). I tried to manage the drive in Windows and this was the status - "gpt protective partition". I was unable to remove the partition or reformat in any way.
I googled the phrase and came up with http://blog.paulgu.com/2008/01/06/how-to-delete-gpt-protective-partition . This worked perfectly, and now I have control of the drive in Windows again!
